Damage Assessment
Water damage is assessed along two dimensions: contamination level (Category) and moisture volume (Class). Our certified technicians evaluate both on arrival — because the right protocol depends on exactly what you're dealing with.
Contamination Level
Category 1
Clean water. No immediate health threat.
Water originating from a sanitary source poses no risk upon contact. This is the most straightforward type of loss to address — but it can escalate to Category 2 if not mitigated quickly.
Category 2
Contaminated water. Avoid contact.
Gray water carries biological or chemical contaminants at levels that can cause illness if ingested or absorbed. Protective handling is required, and affected materials must be properly treated or removed.
Category 3
Hazardous water. Do not enter unprotected.
Black water is severely contaminated and may carry pathogens, toxins, heavy metals, pesticides, or sewage. Full protective equipment and specialized containment protocols are mandatory. Affected porous materials are typically non-salvageable.
Moisture Volume
Class describes how much water is present and how difficult it will be to dry — determined by the types of materials affected and the depth of saturation. This directly impacts drying time and equipment requirements.
Limited area, minimal moisture.
Only part of a room or a single material type is affected. Water absorption into surrounding materials is low. Fastest to dry and easiest to resolve with standard equipment.
Full room affected, walls involved.
At least an entire room's worth of carpet and pad is wet. Moisture has wicked up wall cavities to 24 inches or less. Structural materials like subfloor panels, wood framing, and concrete slabs retain moisture.
Overhead source, entire area saturated.
Water entered from above — a failed ceiling or roof. Ceilings, walls, insulation, carpet, and subfloor throughout the entire affected area are thoroughly saturated. This requires the most drying capacity.
Dense materials, deep saturation.
Water has penetrated low-porosity materials — hardwood floors, brick, concrete, stone, or plaster. These materials hold moisture at depth and resist standard drying. Extended drying timelines and specialized low-humidity equipment are required.
