Standard homeowner's policies typically exclude sewer backup, but many homeowners carry a sewer backup endorsement or rider. We document everything, communicate directly with your adjuster, and bill insurance directly when possible.

For contained backups in basements or utility areas, displacement is often unnecessary. For larger contamination affecting living spaces or HVAC, temporary relocation is recommended — especially for children, elderly, or immunocompromised residents.

Most residential sewage cleanups are completed in 2–5 days: 1 day for extraction and removal, 2–3 days of structural drying with monitoring, and a final day for sanitization and verification. Reconstruction (drywall, flooring) is scheduled separately.

Per IICRC S500, porous materials saturated with Category 3 water cannot be salvaged: drywall, carpet, padding, fiberboard, insulation, particleboard, and upholstery. Hard, non-porous surfaces (tile, sealed concrete, hardwood) can typically be cleaned and disinfected.
